The CES (Crew Evaluation System) test was developed by Norwegians in 1995, and its first online version was introduced in 2010. The task database consists of 6,500 questions with multiple choice answers. Testing is suitable for evaluating the knowledge of seafarers of different ranks. For those who want to work on a foreign ship, passing CES is just as important as the well-known Marlins test. CES is one of the most popular tests in the world – it is in second place after the Marlins. Here you will also find tasks for checking grammar, understanding English by ear, and knowledge of specialized marine terminology. Many note that CES is even slightly superior to the Marlins in terms of complexity. So the examinee will have to demonstrate maximum professional knowledge and a high level of English.
The CES system covers all sections of the STCW, being an indispensable tool for evaluating the knowledge of the crew. One of the main features is extended randomization, which means that questions are not repeated. CES is used by more than 350 companies worldwide. The system is updated regularly, so it is important to familiarize yourself with the version of the test that you are working with.
The desired level of knowledge of the language is not lower than Pre-Intermediate, with the Intermediate level and higher, the test will be much easier to pass. In addition to a good level of English, competence in the profession is mandatory.
The CES app for your smartphone will help you get familiar with the format of tasks in advance – this simulator will allow you to soberly assess your capabilities and correctly plan your preparation for the exam, focusing on the gaps in knowledge.
Do not forget that even if you are a competent specialist, you may be let down by an unsatisfactory knowledge of English – you will simply get confused in the very wording of the question. So don’t neglect language courses if you really need them.
What is the special feature of CES testing?
First, it takes much more time – you have to complete tasks in 3-6 hours, while the Marlins take 60 minutes. All your responses are saved, and after a certain amount of time, you will not be able to correct any errors. Therefore, you need to be extremely careful and concentrate on completing each task properly.
CES primarily evaluates your professional knowledge and skills. The Marlins have a better chance of winning due to a good level of English. Here, the depth of knowledge in the professional field is strictly checked, so you will have to carefully and comprehensively prepare for the test, remembering the theory.
The questions that make up the CES test are directly related to your specialty and the type of ship you will be working on.
There are several types of test:
- – STCW test
- – Detailed Test
- – Company Specific (the test determined directly by the shipping company is a unique set of tasks)
- – Cargo Handling and Stowage
- – Catering
- – Controlling operation of ship and care for persons onboard
- – Electrical, electronic and control engineering
- – Flag State Test
- – Maintenance and Repair
- – Marine Engineering
- – Maritime English (assessment of profiled English language skills)
- – Navigation
- – Radio Communication GMDSS
In General, the test is very convenient to pass – it does not require any additional software, it can be taken at any time and anywhere, as soon as you are ready.
And, although many consider CES to be the most difficult test for seafarers, the CES certificate confirms your qualifications and is an undeniable plus to your experience. The certificate complies with the regulations of IMO Resolution, SOLAS, MARPOL Annex VI, STCW ‘2010, GMDSS. As you can see, it is difficult to argue with the advantage of having such a certificate on hand.
