As a general rule, the minimum under-keel clearance should be metre whilst navigating fairway and canals etc. When alongside the berth the under-keel clearance should be from 0.3 metre for smaller vessels to 1.0 metre for bigger vessel. Master to bear in mind and taking into account crewell manual that large beam vessels has an greater increase of draft caused by heeling. Naturally should the Master feel that this is insufficient due to circumstances or prevailing conditions, e.g. height of sea, ground swell etc., then he should make such additional allowance as he considers necessary. In the event the vessel is informed That there is likely to be less clearance than that recommended, then the Master shall obtain as much local information as possible from pilots, harbour authorities, agents etc. and revert to the Safety/Quality Department with full details. A discourse will then take place between the Master and the Safety/Quality Department where a joint decision is made as to the course of action to be followed, always recognizing as in compliance with ISM Code that with regard to the safety of the vessel, the Master’s decision is final as he has responsibility for the vessel.
