Confined spaces are any space with little or no ventilation. Many types of ships belong to this type of space. You can distinguish cargo tanks, as well as ballast tanks, cofferdams and other separate rooms on ships that transport extremely dangerous cargo. Such premises may also include control rooms in which loading is controlled. Working in such premises is considered extremely dangerous. If such spaces are directly adjacent to a tank transporting gas, then there may well be gas contamination in the premises due to a gas leak. It is for this reason that it is necessary to constantly monitor the atmosphere inside. For this purpose, various gas control systems are used. Why are confined spaces dangerous for humans? When a seafarer enters such a premises, he may be warned: There may be a lack of oxygen needed for breathing. Dangerous concentrations of gases in the air, including toxic ones. The steam contains substances that are classified as fire and explosive. In addition, there may be secondary hazards, such as dim light, noise, vibrations, slippery surfaces, etc. Precautions when working in confined spaces Initially, it is important to understand that even if the room is considered safe, a person in any situation must be prepared for the sudden appearance of various dangers. Therefore, the most important precaution is the following: do not enter confined spaces unless absolutely necessary. If you all had to enter such a room, be sure to make sure that the ventilation system and sensors that monitor the level of oxygen and toxic gases inside are in good working order. If people are forced to constantly work in this mode, then the premises need to be checked every few hours. This is important to ensure the normal well-being of seafarers. And if a crew member suddenly feels unwell, he must be immediately removed from such a room. If working conditions are particularly dangerous, it is recommended to wear special protective masks. Do not under any circumstances throw them away.
