Lookout It is the duty of the Officer of the Watch to ensure that an efficient lookout is main- tained at all times.Between the hours of sunset and sunrise a lookout shall be on the bridge in addition tothe Officer of the watch. During daylight hours, if the navigational circumstancespermit, the lookout may be allocated duties away from the Bridge and during these times the Officer of the watch shall perform the duties of the lookout, however, at all such times the appointed lookout shall be readily available to be called to return to the Bridge should the Officer of the watch require the lookout’s services.
In vessels which have a separate chart room, the officer of the watch may visit the chart room, when essential, for a short period for the necessary performance of navigational duties, but it shall previously be ascertained it is safe to do so.
Calling the Master – Standing Instructions and Daily Orders
The Master shall ensure that clear instructions regarding procedures for navigation are on the bridge in the form of Standing Instructions and Daily Orders in the “MASTER’S ORDER BOOK”. Such instructions shall reflect any particular requirements the Master may have.
The Master shall be called in the following circumstances:
When restricted visibility is either encountered or suspected.
When the traffic concern.
conditions or the movements of other vessels are causing
Whenever a substantial alteration of the pre-planned course is necessary, except for necessary collision avoidance.
When difficulty is experienced in maintaining a course.
On failing to sight land, or a navigational mark, or on failing to obtain soundings by the expected time.
When unexpectedly land or a navigation mark is sighted or change in soundings occurs.
Whenever there is an unusually large compass error.
In the event of serious breakdown of the engines, steering gear problems or failure of any essential navigational equipment which may navigation of the vessel.

When in adverse weather it is considered that damage may be caused to the vessel or its cargo by continuing present course and speed.
When the vessel meets any hazards to navigation, such as ice or derelicts.
When any one aspect of his duties demands his undivided attention and he is therefore unable to attend to his other duties.
When any emergency situation or situation in which he is in any doubt or which he considers the Master shall be aware of.
Notwithstanding the above, the master vacancy shall give clear written instructions in the MASTER’S ORDER BOOK as to when the Master in addition to above is to be called and it shall be clearly understood by all that the Master is available at any and all times and that the officer of the watch shall not hesitate to request the Master’s presence on the bridge whenever it is felt necessary or appropriate.
