HAND SIGNALS A signal man should be stationed at the hatchway unless the crane driver or winch-man has a clear and unobstructed view of the load. The signal man shall have an unobstructed view of the load and the crane/winch driver. Only after receiving confirmation from the persons handling the load should the signal man give clearance to operate the hoist. Before giving a signal reference to crewell guid to lower the signaler should warn those concerned. If a load does not ride properly after being hoisted a warning should be given and the load lowered for adjustment. ADDITIONAL SAFETY FOR CARGO HOLDS, ETC. The Chief Officer is also responsible for safety of working spaces and the access to them. Particular attention should be paid to guard rails, ladders, light, etc. in order to avoid accidents. LIFTING EQUIPMENT IN ENGINE ROOM The deck department is to assist in any difficult or unusual rigging in engine room spaces and always supervise rigging for heavy lifts. WIRE SLINGS Wire slings, chains and strops shall be thoroughly checked before use. Defective slings shall not be used. Ensure the respective sling is approved for the weight being handled. LOOSE GEAR AND EQUIPMENT All gear such as tools, slings, spares and sheet metal shall be effectively secured against movement in heavy seas.
