OOW Duties and Responsibilities
The second assistant is responsible to the master:
Maintaining a navigational watch
Voyage planning, including preparation of all necessary charts and publications.
Correction and maintenance of nautical charts, marine and reference publications including electronic/digital publications such as Chartco, ENC, ADP, etc.
Monitoring and reporting of navigation equipment defects.
Supervising the mooring of the vessel as directed by the captain.
Maintain medical locker in accordance with flag state requirements.
If appropriately qualified, manage the ship's medical support
Management and communication of safety initiatives and being on board
Any other duties assigned by the Master.
Responsible to the senior mate for:
Maintain cargo control at the port, including operation of cargo related systems as required.
Maintenance of ship breathing and resuscitation equipment.
Any other duties assigned to him by the Chief Officer, including duties to enhance the safety of the ship both at sea and in port.
Make sure the load line and valve are correct before starting work.
Cargo operations as directed by the General Manager.
Ensuring proper deck and watch watches are in place and that the vessel remains securely moored at all times.
Ensuring that all LSA/FFA (Life Saving Appliances and Fire Extinguishing Appliances) are available, ready for use in emergency situations.
Monitor compliance with agreed loading/unloading plans during cargo operations with special emphasis on stability/loading. Any deviation, if noted, is immediately reported to the supervisor.
Maintain a record of all cases in sequential order in the port log. (This may be in the regular register book).
Maintaining cargo records in accordance with company requirements.
The standard procedure for transferring a senior mate to the start is to have 2-3 promotions or more.
