This line must be drained completely of water or, if it is required to keep the line pressurised for any reason, open hoses are to be connected to the forward and highest hydrants in the system with the pump operated continuously. The seawater pump to be run from sea to sea and a constant flow is to be maintained in all the lines.
Main Engine
The main engine is to be kept hot and the generator’s cooling water is to be run through main engine to keep the temperatures up.
Engine Room Temperatures
Temperatures in the engine are to be kept up and cooling vent fans should be reversed or shut down. Air ducts are to be closed up.
Electric Motors
All electric motors are to have heating lamps or heaters switched on or they are to be run continuously if possible and practicable.
Sea Suctions
All sea suction boxes are to be regularly steamed out if at any time it is suspected the ice level to be close.High suctions should not be used except in an emergency or when it is considered likely that mud, sludge, slurry or debris might be drawn into the filter boxes. Whenever possible, low suctions are to be used.
Hydraulic Machinery
All machinery is to be operated regularly and tank heaters are to be switched on. All seawater-cooling systems are to be drained free of water and blown through with air. Machinery is to be left running continuously.
The lifeboat engine is to be run every watch and checks are to be made to ensure that there is no water in the system. Fuel tanks and lines are to be checked for freezing. Heating lamps are to be placed inside the boat if necessary.
