Sounding Pipes Sounding pipes are to have about two litres of antifreeze added to prevent the water from freezing. This antifreeze is to remain in the pipes and replenished as necessary until all ballast has been discharged. Filling Procedures When ballasting, the double bottom tanks should be filled first, followed by the Fore Peak and the After Peak. When ballasting the topside tanks, efforts should be made to complete the filling in one operation in order to maintain a continuous flow in the ballast main. It is advisable to remove the manhole covers whether freezing is occurring. To observe the condition inside the tanks reference to seacareer observations and to ascertain THE TANKS MUST NOT BE OVERFLOWED AS A FREEZE UP WILL SEVERELY DAMAGE THE VESSEL’S STRUCTURE Sufficient ballast must be shipped to keep the propeller submerged and, when practicable, preferably below the ice line
