As in other areas of activity on board a ship, every seafarer is required to have great hard work and diligence in their work. There is even a saying that a hard worker does what a lazy person does not want to do. Thus, a seafarer’s career growth is no different from other professions. More often than not, the hierarchy of careers and professions in the maritime industry can seem quite overwhelming to most people. Sometimes a much-desired promotion does not come, and many sailors leave the ship forever, ending their careers. To prevent this from happening, there are several techniques that will help you achieve what you want as quickly as possible. 1 – Become a valuable employee It is important to understand that no employee will ever advance anywhere if he does not deserve it. Any success is possible only with fruitful work. The individual must perform his or her job and all assigned responsibilities effectively and efficiently. Don't forget about job responsibilities, too. 2 – Do all your work better than just well. On a ship, to stand out, you need to devote yourself entirely to your work. Any crewing company looks out for those who show sensitivity and dedication to their work. Enthusiasm is wonderful.  But when it is backed by good performance and potential of the employee, it can lead to good career growth. 3 – Volunteer This refers to various works on the ship. Many companies are looking for employees who can perform more diverse jobs and responsibilities. Of course, in this case we must not forget about our direct responsibilities. 4 – Having leadership qualities Every maritime professional must highlight their strengths and demonstrate their leadership skills. Professionalism at work is incredibly important. It is essential in achieving success. For example, if you are the first officer and want to get into the captain's chair, it is worth demonstrating your ability to lead and motivate the team. 5 – Don't forget about interpersonal relationships It is very important to have good relationships with the crew: subordinates, colleagues and, of course, with superiors. Remember that a good image of a professional often plays one of the most important roles in crewing. 6 – Learn something new every day Every person is constantly learning something. You need to improve your professional skills every day. And learning new and advanced technologies and knowledge always contributes to improving skills. 7 – don’t mention your past positive experiences It is absolutely not a mistake when you mention your past achievements and success during an interview. Especially when it comes to moving up the career ladder. Since maritime specialists are together on the same team for a fairly short period of time. Therefore, it’s not a bad idea to tell even your senior colleagues about your professional experience. 8 – never be afraid of responsibility It is important not to be afraid to periodically exceed all the expectations of those who outrank you. To become a successful “learner”, it is important to have the right attitude towards your responsibilities, be dedicated to your work and have the will to achieve your goals. It is also important to understand that sometimes to achieve success it is enough to work long and hard within one company. And sometimes, to get a much-coveted promotion, you can jump from company to company. In any case, the method of career advancement is up to you to choose. The main thing is perseverance and determination!
