The master is responsible to the company for:
General command of the ship.
Safety of the crew, the vessel, its cargo and the environment.
Implementation of Company Policies contained in general fleet instructions, Company manuals and other official Company instructions on all safety and environmental issues.
Onboard discipline of all officers and crew, and the assessment is the same.
Safe ship navigation.
Advising the Chief Engineer and General Manager on relevant voyage details.
Ensuring that flight orders are fully understood and followed.
Providing the Company and Charterers with accurate information about cargo operations.
Advising the Company when instructions cannot be followed or he is unsure of the intended instruction.
Supervise all cargo and ballast space preparations including cleaning.
Approval/checking and signing of the Chief Mate's cargo plan.
Review and sign all applicable shipping documents and documentation.
Advising the Company on any operational issues regarding cargo operations such as short load, pollution, overload
Review and monitoring of any cargo/ballast plan prepared by the Chief Director.
Communication with Owners, Company, Charterer and any other party.
Compliance with any legal, local or international regulations that affect the vessel.
Certification of the vessel and crew for trading is required.

Maintenance of the vessel and its equipment.
Maintaining all Company and other records required to be maintained or provided.
Reporting any casualty or damage affecting the vessel, its crew or its cargo to the Company and other Parties as deemed necessary.
Proper accounting and safety of the Company's funds.
Accounting for crew wages on a monthly basis and at the time of decommissioning.
Execution of the vessel's Charter professionally and competently.
Checking bunkers and stores prior to the voyage to ensure there is enough on board.
Generally responsible for the training of ship personnel. He is assisted by the Chief Mate and Chief Engineer in training the deck and engine cadets respectively.

SSO tasks if the C/O is unable to perform duties for any reason.

Including the administration of medical care and communication of such incidents with shore consultants. This responsibility may be assigned to another suitably qualified officer on board the vessel if the Master chooses to do so.
