Who Is a Ship Plumber and Where Do They Work?
A Ship's Plumber is a specialist essential for life onboard large vessels. On a cruise ship carrying 2,000–6,000 passengers and 1,000–2,000 crew members, plumbing infrastructure includes thousands of meters of pipelines, hundreds of cabins and bathrooms, pools, laundries, galleys, and public areas. The plumber is usually part of the Engine Department or Hotel Department (on passenger vessels). They report to the Chief Engineer or Hotel Chief Engineer. On merchant vessels, they may report to the Second Engineer (2/E).
Main Difference from Shore-Based Plumbing
The key difference between a marine plumber and a shore plumber is autonomy. At sea, there is no emergency repair service, hardware store, or spare parts delivery. If a pipe bursts at 3 AM or the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) fails, the plumber must solve the problem using available onboard resources. Shipowners therefore look for specialists with strong troubleshooting skills, independence, and practical experience.
Ship Plumber Duties
Freshwater System
Maintenance of freshwater pipelines supplying cabins, galleys, laundries, and medical facilities. Operation of hydrophore systems, calorifiers, water heaters, and UV sterilizers. Water quality monitoring and chlorination.

Work with copper, steel, stainless steel, and PVC pipes. Skills include soldering, TIG welding, press-fitting, threading, and pressure testing.
Laundry Equipment
Installation and maintenance of industrial washing machines and dryers including water supply, drainage, and steam connections.
Plumber vs Fitter
Plumber
Focuses on accommodation and sanitary systems: freshwater, sewage, heating, bathrooms, pools, and laundry systems.
Fitter
Works mainly in the engine room performing welding, machinery repairs, pump maintenance, valve grinding, and mechanical work.On large vessels both positions exist separately and do not overlap.
