Vessel Types and Job Specifics
Single engineers work on different vessel types, and requirements vary depending on automation level and operational profile.
Cargo Fleet: Coasters and Small Cargo Vessels
This is the main sector for single engineer jobs. Vessels from 1,500–8,000 DWT operating on European and Mediterranean routes. Engineers maintain medium-speed and high-speed engines without shore support. The main advantage is short rotations such as 4/4 or 6/6 weeks.
Offshore / OSV Fleet
The most technically demanding sector. Engineers work with:
- DP systems,
- firefighting systems,
- hydraulic deck equipment,
- multiple main engines.
OSV (Offshore Support Vessel) includes:
- supply vessels,
- AHTS,
- crew boats,
- utility vessels.
Many offshore vessels operate in UMS mode (Unattended Machinery Spaces).
Yacht Sector
On yachts, the sole engineer handles engines, generators, HVAC, watermakers, hydraulics, electronics and tenders.
Passenger Fleet
On ferries and small cruise vessels, the engineer additionally maintains passenger support systems including air conditioning, freshwater and electrical systems.Find vessel information through Global Vessel Database
UMS Mode and Automation
Most vessels employing a single engineer operate with UMS (Unattended Machinery Spaces).
What It Means in Practice
- The engineer must fully understand alarm systems.
- Planned maintenance is carried out during daytime.
- In case of alarm activation, the engineer must quickly attend the engine room.
- Knowledge of instrumentation and automation systems is essential.
Single Engineer Salary
Salary depends on vessel type, engine power, flag, contract duration and automation level.
Average Salary Range
