Drilling platform: what is it and what are its benefits?
Drilling platforms are, of course, a very important element in the oil and gas production system. These engineering structures are designed for drilling wells in marine and ocean conditions. They operate both offshore and offshore, allowing the development of fields inaccessible to land-based drilling rigs. Despite its impressive dimensions and design complexity, the drilling platform functions as an autonomous mini-city: with its own energy complex, residential areas and a team of professionals to ensure uninterrupted operation.We'll take a closer look at what a drilling platform is, how it benefits the global economy, why it remains an important part of the oil and gas industry, and how you can get a job work on a drilling platform at sea.
What is a drilling platform?
This is a fairly large-sized structure designed for drilling wells and subsequent extraction of hydrocarbons from the sea or ocean floor. Depending on the type of platform and the depth of the reservoir, there are several main types of structures:
Stationary platforms are installed on the seabed and secured with piles. They are used at depths of up to 500 meters and are operated in one place for many years.
Semi-submersible platforms are floating structures that are partially submerged in water. They are resistant to storms and can be used at depths of up to 1500 meters.
Floating drilling rigs (drilling ships) are mobile platforms with a dynamic positioning system. Used at depths of more than 2000 meters.
Self-lifting units (SPU) - have legs that drop to the bottom to secure them. Used in shallow water (up to 120 meters).
How is the drilling platform constructed?
Modern drilling platforms are high-tech facilities that combine several functional areas:
The drilling module is the center of the entire platform, where the drilling tower and equipment for drilling wells are located.
Energy block - includes generators, power supply systems, diesel engines.
Accommodation module - crew cabins, dining room, gym, first aid station and recreation area.
The command center is the control point for all processes, including drilling, fire safety and system monitoring.
Storage and technical compartments - for storing drilling fluid, tools, spare parts.
From 50 to 200 people can be on the platform at the same time. They all work on a rotational basis, replacing each other every 2–4 weeks. Naturally, working conditions depend on the shipowner. Therefore, before you get a job work on a drilling platform at sea, it’s worth thinking carefully about everything and discussing all the details with management.
Why are drilling platforms needed?
Drilling platforms play a key role in the global economy. They provide access to hydrocarbons located beneath the seabed - often in inaccessible and difficult to navigate areas. Here are the main tasks that these installations perform:
Exploration and drilling. The platforms allow for geological exploration, assessment of oil and gas reserves, and then drilling production wells.
Hydrocarbon production. After successful drilling, the process of extracting oil and gas begins. In some cases, the extracted resources are stored on the platform itself, in others they are transported through pipelines or tankers.
Scientific research. Some platforms are used for scientific purposes - to study geological processes, monitor seismic activity and assess climate change.
Job creation. One platform provides jobs for dozens of specialists: from engineers to chefs. In addition, their maintenance requires the participation of supply vessels, tugs, helicopter companies and port structures.
Accordingly, platforms require coordinated work of various professionals:
drilling engineers;
drilling rig operators;
electromechanics and power engineers;
cooks, doctors, storekeepers;
captain and deck crew on supply vessels;
safety engineers.
All specialists undergo safety training and certification. The salary level depends on the position, qualifications and region.
