Vessels for evacuation from platforms: features of the craft, features of employment
The offshore oil and gas industry is a high-risk area. Despite high safety standards, emergencies on offshore platforms, such as fires, gas releases or man-made accidents, can occur suddenly. It is for such cases that personnel evacuation vessels - highly equipped, fast and reliable watercraft, whose task is to save people in an emergency.These vessels function not only as transport units, but also as mobile centers for emergency assistance, medical care and accommodation for evacuees. Working on such a ship requires from the crew not just seamanship, but a true calling - to be there when you need to act without delay.
Vessel design: when every second counts
Evacuation ships outwardly they resemble patrol or small passenger ships, but at the same time they have a lot of design features:
Increased passenger capacity - from 50 to 300 people, including seats and lying down.
Evacuation systems: movable ladders, beam cranes, boats and lifting devices.
A medical unit that allows first aid to be provided to victims immediately after evacuation.
Rapid approach and stabilization systems - including dynamic positioning (DP) for safe platform parking even in difficult weather conditions.
Duplication of life support systems to ensure autonomous operation until rescue or medical services arrive.
Crew composition of the evacuation vessel is formed taking into account strict requirements:
Captains and mates must have excellent maneuvering skills near platforms and control the vessel in difficult conditions.
Doctors and emergency specialists must be able to work with victims in a state of shock, trauma, or frostbite.
Rescue equipment operators control evacuation devices and ensure quick and safe boarding;
Each crew member undergoes regular training on actions in emergency situations, evacuation from heights, and lifting people from the water.
In addition to basic maritime training, it requires readiness to work in conditions of constant anticipation of alarm.
On the one side, evacuation ship often anchored near the platform, awaiting alarm. But this does not mean that the service is monotonous:
Grafik - most often 28/28, as in the offshore industry;
Exercises and inspections - almost every week the crew participates in training and equipment checks;
unpredictability - every watch can turn into a real rescue operation;
respect for the profession - such crews are highly valued in the oil and gas sector as the first line of defense for human life.
