Vessel dredger: technique that changes the terrain
Dredger is a specialized vessel designed for dredging, extracting soil from the bottom of reservoirs, clearing fairways, deepening ports and canals, as well as creating artificial land areas. Such vessels are in demand in the construction of marine and river infrastructure, hydraulic facilities and in the extraction of sand and gravel.
Work dredger - heavy, but it is an extremely important part of sea and river logistics. Without such vessels it is impossible to maintain navigation depths, expand ports or build coastal structures.
Why are such watercraft needed at all?
Depending on the tasks and design, there are several types of dredgers:
tank (self-transport) - collect soil and transport it to the dump site;
cutting - equipped with a cutter that loosens the bottom before suction;
grab - work with the help of cranes and grabs;
ejector and hydraulic - create a flow of water and pump out suspended soil.
Each type of dredger performs specific tasks: from targeted deepening of canals to large-scale reclamation of new territories.Installed on board:
high power pumping stations;
dredgers, cutters, hydraulic pipes;
pontoons and unloading systems;
anchor and positioning systems;
engines, generators, compressors;
control bridges, control rooms.
Typically, the vessel works in coordination with barges where the excavated material is shipped, or through pipelines it discharges the material onto the shore.
Who works on the dredger?
The crew is selected based on technical complexity, but most often it includes:
captain and mates;
mechanics, motorists;
dredger and pumping equipment operator;
electrician;
milling and positioning operator;
sailors and repair specialists.
The team must be well-coordinated: the slightest mistake can lead to equipment breakdown or disruption of the process.
To get hired on such a vessel, you need: experience in the technical fleet or dredging; you will also need knowledge of hydraulics and pumping systems, and the ability to work with heavy equipment and pipelines. Employers also always pay attention to the availability of the necessary diplomas and certificates, physical endurance and attention to safety precautions. A level of English is desirable, especially for international projects.
Contracts are most often rotational, 30/30 or 60/30. Work can be carried out both near the shore and in open areas. But for sailors, employment on such a vessel opens up many positive aspects, for example:
stable and decent salary;
food, accommodation and clothing at the expense of the employer;
health insurance;
prospects for career growth (to shift manager, supervisor, engineer);
bonuses for complex projects and rework.
The dredger is a vessel where there is always work: seasonal dredging, port expansion, bridge and terminal construction projects.
