Universal support vessels perform a wide range of tasks in the offshore industry, including offshore installations, diving support and research using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). The effective operation of such vessels is ensured by a well-coordinated team of professionals, each of whom performs specific functions. Accordingly, the fleet requires qualified, experienced specialists who are able to work on a support vessel, despite all the difficulties that exist in the fleet. 

Main positions at universal support vessel

On universal support vessel operate the following specialists: 

  1. Captain. Bears full responsibility for the vessel, crew and performance of assigned tasks. Manages navigation, operations and ensures compliance with international and domestic regulations.​

  2. Senior mate. Responsible for deck operations, including loading and unloading equipment, and onboard safety. Supervises the work of the deck crew and maintains the necessary documentation.​

  3. Second mate. Engaged in navigation, route planning and cartography. Monitors navigation equipment and participates in watch duty.​

  4. Third mate. Ensures compliance with safety measures, conducts crew training on emergency procedures and participates in watch duty.​

  5. Senior mechanic. Manages the technical operation of the vessel, is responsible for the operation of all mechanical and electrical systems, as well as for technical personnel.​

  6. Second mechanic. Controls the operation of main and auxiliary engines, power supply systems and other technical devices.​

  7. Third mechanic. Monitors auxiliary mechanisms, cooling and air conditioning systems, and participates in equipment repair.​

  8. Electromechanic. Responsible for the ship's electrical equipment, including communication, navigation and automation systems.​

  9. Boatswain. Manages the deck crew, organizes maintenance work on the deck, rigging and equipment.​

  10. Sailors. Perform various deck works, participate in mooring, loading, unloading and servicing equipment.​

  11. Motorists. Maintain and repair engine room mechanisms, monitor the operation of engines and auxiliary systems.​

  12. Crane operators. They operate deck cranes and other lifting mechanisms during loading and unloading operations.​

  13. Divers. Carry out underwater work related to inspection, repair and installation of underwater structures.​

  14. ROV operators. They control remotely operated underwater vehicles to conduct underwater research and work.​

  15. Cook and galley staff. Provide food to the crew, maintain cleanliness and order in the galley and dining room.​

Working on a universal vessel A number of features can be noted: 

  1. Dynamic positioning systems. MRSVs are often equipped with DP2 or DP3 systems, allowing the vessel to be held in position without the use of anchors. This requires officers to have the appropriate certifications and skills to work with such systems.​

  2. Multifunctionality. The vessel can perform a variety of tasks, including transporting cargo, supporting diving operations, servicing drilling platforms and laying underwater communications. This places high demands on the qualifications of the crew and their ability to adapt to different types of work.​

  3. Modern equipment. The presence on board of complex technical systems, such as cranes, ROVs and diving equipment, requires constant training and advanced training from the crew.​

Requirements for candidates

Shipowners usually put forward certain requirements for applicants:

  1. Education and certificates. Availability of specialized maritime education and valid certificates in accordance with international standards (STCW).​

  2. Experience. Experience on similar vessels or in the offshore industry is preferred.​

  3. Knowledge of English. Most positions require proficiency in English at a level sufficient for professional communication and record keeping.​
