Working on an oil platform: what vacancies are offered?

Oil platforms are large offshore structures designed for drilling and extracting oil and gas from the seabed. Working for them attracts high wages and the opportunity to build a career in the international industry. However, working conditions are specific: shift work, limited space, high responsibility and physical activity. Let's figure out which specialists are in demand on the platform, what requirements are imposed on candidates and how to get such a job.

Design and tasks of the craft

Oil platform is an autonomous system that can include drilling, production, residential and auxiliary modules. It can be stationary (fixed to the bottom) or floating (movable). Main tasks of the platform:

  • exploration and drilling of wells;

  • production, primary processing and storage of hydrocarbons;

  • transportation of resources on shore or on tankers;

  • monitoring environmental safety and technical condition of equipment.

To solve these problems, a multidisciplinary team is formed, which includes dozens and sometimes hundreds of specialists.

Main areas of vacancies

On such a vessel the crew includes the following specialists:

  • administrative staff;

  • drilling and production specialists (drillers, drillers' assistants, engineers);

  • technical composition;

  • ship's crew;

  • service personnel;

  • occupational safety and health specialists.

To work on such a craft you need: specialized education, international safety certificates, knowledge of English, good physical and psychological health, and at least 1 year of experience in a similar position.

Work is carried out on a rotation basis: 14/14, 28/28, less often 60/30. During the shift, the employee lives on the platform - in separate cabins, with meals and basic services. The working day is 12 hours, including night shifts. Due to isolation and difficult working conditions, wages are significantly higher than average: from $2000–2500 for maintenance personnel to $8000–10000 for engineers and drillers at international sites.

Where to look for vacancies?

Working on an oil platform is not only a challenge, but also an excellent opportunity for professional and financial growth.
