Oil platform supply vessel: reliable logistics

Oil platform supply vessel is a specialized sea vessel designed to deliver equipment, fuel, fresh water, food and other necessary cargo to offshore drilling and production platforms. Such vessels provide continuous support for the operation of offshore facilities and operate in the most difficult weather conditions, often far from the coastline.

This is one of the key links in the offshore oil and gas infrastructure. Without uninterrupted logistics, it is impossible to maintain the operation of platforms where each stop can cost millions.

Tasks and equipment of the supply vessel

Main tasks:

  • delivery of container, palletized and bulk cargo;

  • transportation of chemicals, fuel and process water;

  • waste evacuation from platforms;

  • transportation of personnel and replacement crews;

  • support for emergency and technical operations.

Such vessels are equipped with specialized equipment: powerful cranes, deck winches, dynamic positioning (DP) systems, liquid tanks, compressors, as well as rescue and fire fighting equipment. Some ships are additionally equipped with helipads.

Who works on such ships?

The crew is formed depending on the scale and objectives of the flight. As a rule, the following people work on board:

  • captain and chief mate;

  • mechanics and mechanics;

  • navigators;

  • electromechanical;

  • sailors, loaders;

  • positioning and camera equipment specialists;

  • cook, medic (on large ships).

The work is organized on a rotational basis: from 28/28 to 60/30, depending on the shipowner. The crew lives on board, where there are all the necessary conditions - cabins, a dining room, a gym, a rest room.

Requirements for seafarers

To work on a supply vessel you need:

  • valid diplomas and certificates (including safety: BST, PSCRB, AFF);

  • experience working on similar types of vessels or offshore projects;

  • knowledge of English (for international flights - required);

  • stress tolerance and discipline;

  • ability to work in a team and quickly respond to emergency situations.

Experience with DP systems, knowledge of ISPS, MARPOL and basic skills in cargo operations will be an added advantage.
