 Features of employment in reefer ship: what are the requirements for applicants?

What are reefer ships? These are special ships that are designed to transport perishable products. Cargo holds on such vehicles have special, highly reliable thermal insulation, as well as refrigeration units that can guarantee complete cooling of the holds. Depending on the type of goods transported, the temperature in the holds can be maintained from +5 to -25 degrees.As a rule, such ships are multi-deck and have very small hatches to minimize cold losses during cargo operations. The cargo device on such ships is boom, sometimes crane.
Now these ships play a key role in the global trade of food, medicine and other goods that require special storage conditions. Work on reefers requires seafarers to have high qualifications and special knowledge.

What are they used for? reefer ships?

As we have already said, the main purpose of refrigerated ships is to transport temperature-sensitive cargo. For example, such ships are used to transport:

  • fresh and frozen food (fish, meat, vegetables, fruits, dairy products);

  • medicines and vaccines;

  • flowers and other plants;

  • chemical products requiring compliance with temperature conditions.

Thanks to the availability of modern cooling and ventilation systems, reefer ships allow you to transport such cargo over long distances, maintaining their quality and safety.

Classification of refrigerated vessels

It is worth noting that refrigerated ships are distinguished according to several main parameters:

  1. By navigation area: there are ships with a limited and unlimited navigation area. The second type is highly autonomous and is capable of staying on a voyage from 60 to 120 days without replenishing fuel, food and other necessary resources.

  2. According to the range of cargo transported: there are specialized vessels designed to transport specific types of goods, and universal ones capable of transporting a wide range of products.

  3. According to the temperature regime in the holds: there are low-temperature and high-temperature refrigerated ships. The former are designed for transporting chilled products such as meat, fish, eggs, fruits and vegetables. The second are for transporting frozen products, and fishing vessels can also be used for quick freezing of fresh catch.

Modern large reefer ships are distinguished by significant hold volumes: from 3000–3500 m³ on fishing and refrigeration vessels to 20,000–23,000 m³ on transport and floating bases. The temperature in the holds can vary from -15°C to -30°C, and the boiling point of the refrigerant can vary from -25°C to -40°C.
