Research vessel: on the border of knowledge and maritime profession

Research Vessels (RVs) are unique floating laboratories designed to study the World Ocean, atmosphere, seabed, ecosystems, climate processes and other natural phenomena. These ships bring together scientists and marine specialists working closely together for one goal - obtaining new knowledge.NIS are used by public and private institutions, oil and gas and climate change organizations, defense structures and environmental funds. Their routes run through polar waters, equatorial currents, underwater faults and undeveloped areas of the planet.

Purpose and tasks

Each research vessel can perform several types of missions:

  • hydrographic and geophysical research;

  • collection of water, air, soil and flora samples;

  • meteorological and climate observations;

  • underwater mapping and photography;

  • observation of marine organisms and migrations;

  • testing new technologies (including defense and energy).

On board is a complex of laboratories, scientific equipment, communication systems, robotic platforms and hydroacoustic instruments.

Technical equipment

NIS are distinguished by a high level of technology. Depending on the specialization, the following may be on board:

  • laboratories of various profiles (chemical, biological, geological);

  • winches and submarine cables;

  • cranes and launch platforms for ROVs and AUVs;

  • sonars, echo sounders, weather stations;

  • dynamic positioning (DP) systems;

  • helipads and hydrographic boats.

They are adapted to work anywhere on the planet, including in ice and stormy areas.The crew consists of two parts: ship and scientific.Crew:

  • captain, navigators, mechanics;

  • mechanics, electricians, cooks;

  • winch and crane operators;

  • security and communications specialists.

Scientific composition:

  • oceanologists, geologists, biologists, physicists;

  • technical assistants and laboratory assistants;

  • equipment engineers.

Effective work is only possible with the full cooperation of both teams - coherence and discipline are required.

Requirements for seafarers

It is important for the ship's crew:

  • availability of valid diplomas and certificates;

  • readiness for long expeditions (from 1 to 6 months);

  • knowledge of English is almost always required;

  • ability to operate scientific equipment or ROVs is a plus;

  • high responsibility and stress resistance.

NIS work in international projects, and the crew interacts with foreign colleagues, international services and ports.NIS provide comfortable conditions for employees: impeccable cabins, quality food, amenities, stable wages, contracts with the possibility of extension, bonuses for field missions.

The work often combines elements of maritime service, logistics, engineering and research, creating a truly interesting experience.

How does Marine MAN help you get on board as quickly as possible?

We cooperate with research centers, universities and maritime operators. We offer vacancies for navigators, mechanics, electricians and technical specialists on NIS - both in the CIS countries and abroad. We will help you fill out the documents, pass an interview and get into a team that is working on something that changes the world.
