Roller: what kind of ship is this, who can find a job?

What does it represent rolker (from the English Ro-Ro - roll-on/roll-off)? This is a type of cargo ship designed to transport wheeled vehicles that can be rolled in or out on special ramps. Unlike container ships, where equipment is transported in containers, on ro-ro ships cars, trailers, trains, buses, construction and military equipment are loaded under their own power or with the help of tugs.The key feature of a ro-ro carrier is the presence of ramps and internal decks with elevators along which equipment moves between levels. This makes loading and unloading quick and the vessel's operation highly efficient.

Where are they usually used? rollers?

Most often, such vessels are used for:

  • international transportation of cars and equipment between factories and dealers;

  • military transportation (including tanks and armored vehicles);

  • ferry routes transporting trucks, buses and cars;

  • Arctic and remote flights, where it is important to quickly unload equipment in ports with minimal infrastructure.

There are different types of ro-ro ships: classic Ro-Ro, Ro-Pax (with the function of transporting passengers), PCC (for passenger cars), ConRo (combined with container decks).

Features of the Ro-Ro service

Ro-Ro service is distinguished by a number of specific tasks:

  • constant work with heavy equipment;

  • increased responsibility for securing cargo;

  • frequent maneuvers in ports;

  • fast loading/unloading - the ship rarely stays in the port for a long time;

  • sometimes work in extreme conditions (especially on Arctic ro-ro vessels).

This makes the work intense and requires quick response, organization and compliance with safety precautions.
