ROV vessel: depth control

ROV vessel deciphered The Remotely Operated Vehicle Support Vessel is not just a ship: it is a true floating high-tech center. It operates remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) that explore depths where humans cannot reach. These watercraft have already become an integral part of underwater construction, rescue operations and scientific discoveries.

What is such a craft used for?

Key ROV missions:

  • Andinspection and repair of pipelines, offshore platforms and underwater structures;

  • search and examination of sunken ships and aircraft;

  • underwater welding, cutting and drilling;

  • scientific research: studying the geology of the seabed and biological systems;

  • environmental monitoring and sampling;

  • rescue missions at great depths.

ROV vessels can work both autonomously and in conjunction with oil platforms, FPSOs (floating oil storage and transfer units), dredgers and drilling ships.
One of the most famous operations involving an ROV vessel is the recovery of the wreckage of Air France 447 in the Atlantic Ocean. Deep-sea ROVs capable of operating at depths of more than 3,900 meters were used for the search.

Equipment on board the ROV vessel

On board this craft there are:

  • ROV descent and recovery systems (LARS);

  • control center with video walls and analytical stations;

  • underwater high-definition cameras, manipulators, sensors and scanners;

  • stabilization complexes (DP1/DP2) for precise fixation of the vessel in a given position.

ROV classes: Observation Class - for visual inspections and Work Class - for heavy operations (welding, installation, drilling).

Notable fleets and vessels:

  • Deep Ocean Group is one of the world's largest operators with a fleet of more than 60 ROV vessels;

  • Subsea 7 is a company with a fleet of innovative vessels, including the legendary Seven Arctic, capable of operating in extreme cold conditions;

  • Fugro, a leader in undersea geoscience, uses ROVs to find new routes for undersea cables and conduct seafloor surveys.

What specialists are present on the crew of such watercraft?

A ship is a living organism, where each crew member plays an important role. In this case, the team contains:

  • captains and navigators;

  • ROV operators and engineers;

  • underwater equipment and electronics technicians;

  • mechanics, electricians, signalmen, sailors;

  • scientific experts on research missions.

The work is organized on a 24/7 rotational basis, especially on the Arctic shelves or in the deep waters of the world's oceans.Who can become part of the team? Find a job on an ROV vessel can:

  • specialists with technical education (electronics, hydraulics, robotics);

  • applicants with international certificates (IMCA, OPITO, STCW);

  • professionals who speak English;

  • applicants who have experience working on underwater equipment and strong resistance to stress.

The contractual terms are most often the following: withexchanges from 28/28 to 60/30 days, competitive wages in foreign currency, a full benefits package: food, accommodation, insurance, workwear, and there is also the opportunity for training, certification and career growth - from a technician to an ROV team supervisor."Marin MAN" is a “bridge” to the profession of the future.
