Semi-submersible oil drilling platform: open ocean drilling
Semi-submersible drilling platform is a marine engineering structure designed for drilling wells at great depths in the open sea. Such platforms are partially submerged in water, which provides them with unique stability even in strong waves. Their main mission is exploration and production of oil and gas in remote areas of the world's oceans.
Platforms of this type play a key role in the global oil and gas industry, especially in regions with deepwater fields: the North Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, West Africa, and the Arctic.
Principle of operation and construction
Semi-submersible platforms consist of:
decks with drilling and accommodation equipment;
vertical pontoons and columns that keep the platform afloat;
anchor system or dynamic positioning (DP);
helipad, lifeboats, generators, cranes;
modules for storing fuel, water, chemicals and equipment.
The platform is partially filled with water and submerged to the desired level for maximum stability. It can be held by anchors or positioning systems that allow it to work at a point without drifting.
Who working on a drilling platform?
From 60 to 150 people are constantly on board. The crew includes:
drilling team (drillers, assistants, drilling engineers);
ship personnel (captain, mechanics, electricians, mechanics);
instrumentation operators and safety specialists;
cooks, doctors, technical staff;
logisticians, dispatchers, supply coordinators.
The work is organized according to a rotation system - most often 28/28 or 42/42. The crew lives and works on the platform, where there is everything they need: cabins, kitchen, dining room, gym, first aid station.
Requirements for specialists
For work on a semi-submersible platform required:
specialized education and proven experience;
international certificates: BOSIET, HUET, H2S, STCW;
knowledge of English (required for offshore documentation and communications);
physical endurance and resistance to stress;
Ability to work in a team and adhere to HSE standards.
Particularly in demand are drillers, cementing engineers, drilling fluid specialists, electricians, welders, and ROV operators.
Working conditions
Despite the remoteness and intensity of work, the platform offers comfortable conditions:
high wages in foreign currency;
accommodation and meals at the expense of the employer;
international insurance, including evacuation;
paid vacations and flights;
Opportunity for career growth within the offshore industry.
The platforms operate year-round, and each flight is an important contribution to the energy stability of countries and companies.
