Shuttle Tanker vacancies

Shuttle tanker: what kind of ship is this, how they work on it and what makes it unique

In the maritime industry, there are ships that perform specialized tasks on the border of logistics and engineering. One of these is the Shuttle Tanker, a high-tech vessel designed to receive oil from offshore platforms and transport it to shore. Unlike conventional tankers, shuttles do not enter terminals, but carry out continuous trips between oil fields and receiving points.Working on a shuttle tanker is constant responsibility, deep technical involvement and unique professional experience.

Features of design and operation

Shuttle tanker is a hybrid between a conventional oil tanker and elements of offshore logistics. Its main differences:

  1. Dynamic positioning (DP) system. Allows you to keep the vessel in a fixed position next to the drilling platform, even in heavy seas.

  2. Equipment for receiving cargo at sea. Floating hoses and connection systems without mooring are used.

  3. Robust housings and security systems. The design is designed to work in difficult conditions - from the North Sea to the Arctic regions.

  4. Process automation. From navigation systems to unloading, control is integrated and controlled from the bridge.

Happy, as a rule, do not stay in ports, but make multiple trips, “collecting” oil from several platforms and delivering it to onshore terminals.

Shuttle tanker service: challenges and specifics

Working on such a vessel is different from traditional tanker service. The crew must have not only maritime, but also offshore skills:

  1. Knowledge of DP system. Particular attention is paid to the positioning of the vessel, especially when mooring to the platform - this is a complex and critical stage.

  2. Operations at sea. The crew is involved in receiving oil from platforms on the high seas, where different safety standards apply.

  3. Long contracts. Flights can be short, but the shift system can be reminiscent of working offshore - for example, every 4 weeks. But this point is individual and depends on the management.

  4. Increased security measures. Constant training, exercises, and monitoring of the environmental situation are an integral part of the service.

  5. High level of comfort. Modern shuttles are built to high standards and provide seafarers with comfortable living conditions.

Service on this type of vessel can be an excellent career springboard. Firstly, it is on such a craft that you can gain irreplaceable experience. Secondly, this is where a decent salary awaits you.  The increased level of responsibility is compensated by high salaries. Thirdly, the shuttle means stability, since most of them work on long-term contracts with large oil companies.Working in challenging regions gives you the opportunity to gain experience in high latitude areas and harsh climates.
