Jobatsea directions about prevention of crankcase explosions

Care must be taken to avoid the conditions necessary for a crankcase explosion. They are usually caused by excessive local overheating of moving parts and Or past impact in the case of medium speed engines. Checking the bearing clearances, checking the crankcase and regular LO analysis will significantly reduce the chances of a crankcase explosion as per jobatsea recommendations. If vessels are equipped with a fog detector, this device must operate continuously. In addition, you should perform a routine crankcase inspection and feel for hot spots. Where vessels are equipped with bearing temperature sensors, they should be carefully monitored and any significant changes in temperature investigated. If the crankcase overheats, slow down the engine immediately and stop it as soon as possible. The LO feed must be maintained and the reverse gear must be engaged and operated.
