Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) Jobs Вакансии Электромеханика.jpg
Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) is a key engineering officer responsible for the entire ship electrical automation ecosystem: from the main switchboard and High Voltage systems to engine automation and cargo monitoring. On the modern fleet, ETO is one of the most in-demand maritime positions with a global shortage of qualified specialists. JobMarineMan features active ETO Jobs at Sea on tankers, LNG carriers, container vessels, bulk carriers, cruise ships, and DP Offshore vessels. Direct hiring without agency commissions — your CV is sent directly to the Technical Superintendent.

Technical Responsibilities of an Electro-Technical Officer

The ETO reports directly to the Chief Engineer and is solely responsible for the vessel’s electrical and automation systems — a wider technical responsibility area than any engine officer. Main responsibilities include:

  • Main Switchboard & Power Generation — main switchboards, generators, AVR regulators
  • Power Management System (PMS) — synchronization and parallel operation of DG sets, load sharing, blackout protection
  • High Voltage Systems — operation of 6.6 kV and 11 kV systems, HV switching, shore connection, blackout recovery
  • Emergency Power — emergency generators, emergency switchboards, UPS systems, emergency lighting
  • Automation & IAS — Integrated Automation Systems including Kongsberg, Wärtsilä NACOS, Valmet, L-3 MAPPS, Praexis
  • Frequency Converters & Drives — ABB ACS, Siemens Sinamics, Danfoss VLT for pumps, cranes, and thrusters
  • Instrumentation & Compliance Equipment — Viscosity Control Units, 15 ppm OWS monitors, ODME systems, cargo tank monitoring
  • Cyber Security Compliance — IMO 2021+ OT-network compliance and automation system protection
  • Navigation & Communication Electronics — bridge electronics support
  • PMS Electrical Tasks — Planned Maintenance System tasks for electrical equipment

Why High Voltage Is Mandatory for Modern ETO

On vessels built after 2020, High Voltage is no longer considered an “extra advantage” — it has become a mandatory core requirement for Electro-Technical Officers. Modern electric propulsion systems, powerful thrusters, and dual-fuel installations operate on 6.6 kV or 11 kV systems as standard.Typical HV responsibilities include:

  • HV switching under permit-to-work procedures
  • Synchronization of HV generators
  • Shore connection (cold ironing)
  • Blackout prevention and blackout recovery
  • Testing and calibration of HV protections
  • Insulation testing of HV cables and windings

For LNG carriers, ULCV container vessels, and DP Offshore fleets, Advanced High Voltage (Management Level) is mandatory — Basic HV is no longer accepted. Technical Superintendents often reject CVs automatically without Advanced HV certification.

What Types of Vessels Hire ETO

LNG ETO Jobs — Tankers, Chemical Tankers & Gas Carriers

Premium segment of the market. LNG ETOs work with dual-fuel automation systems such as ME-GI / X-DF, IG systems, and cargo monitoring platforms including Saab Tank Radar, Emerson, and Honeywell Enraf. Advanced HV, Basic LNG / IGF Code, and ATEX / IECEx are commonly required. CompEx certification provides a major hiring advantage.

Cruise Ship ETO Jobs

Among the most technically complex vessels: Azipod propulsion, thousands of automated cabins, entertainment systems, and medical equipment. Cruise ships usually operate with 2–5 ETOs onboard under a Chief Electrician.

Bulk Carrier & General Cargo

Less intensive workload, but ETO is often the only electrician onboard — versatility is essential.

DP Offshore — The Highest Paid ETO Market

DSV, pipe-layers, OSV, and FPSO fleets. Day rates often exceed $500–700/day. DP2 / DP3 maintenance certificates from Kongsberg or GE are commonly required.

Electrical Equipment & Automation Platforms Used by ETO

Technical experience valued for Marine Electrician / ETO positions:

  • Main Switchboards & Generators: ABB, Siemens, Hyundai, Terasaki
  • HV Systems: 6.6 kV / 11 kV switchboards, transformers, ABB & Schneider breakers
  • PMS (Power Management System): Kongsberg, Wärtsilä, ABB Marine PMS
  • IAS / Automation Platforms: Kongsberg AutoChief, K-Chief, K-Pos; Wärtsilä NACOS Platinum; Valmet DNA; L-3 MAPPS; Praexis
  • PLC: Siemens S7, Allen Bradley, Mitsubishi, Schneider
  • Frequency Drives: ABB ACS, Siemens Sinamics, Danfoss VLT
  • Navigation Electronics: Furuno, JRC, Sperry, Raytheon Anschütz
  • Cargo Systems: Saab Tank Radar, Emerson, Honeywell Enraf, ODME
  • DP Systems: Kongsberg K-Pos, GE Marine
  • Compliance & Measurement Systems: Viscosity Control Units, 15 ppm OWS monitors, ballast water monitoring

Mentioning exact platforms in the CV — especially Kongsberg, ABB, Wärtsilä, Valmet, and L-3 — significantly improves Technical Superintendent response rates.

ETO Work Lifestyle Onboard

Unlike 4/E, 3/E, or 2/E officers, ETOs usually work day work schedules (08:00–17:00) rather than traditional watchkeeping.

Bulk Carrier & General Cargo

ETO is often the sole electrician onboard. Workload is relatively calm with high independence.

Tanker & LNG

Higher workload due to cargo automation and IG / IGF systems. Alarm call-outs are frequent during cargo operations.

Container ULCV

Large reefer networks with 1000+ sockets require constant monitoring. ETOs frequently assist reefer engineers.

Cruise Ships

2–5 ETOs onboard with specialization areas: hotel electric, propulsion, automation. Senior rank is Chief Electrician.

DP Offshore

Very high responsibility during DP operations, often involving significant overtime.Standard contracts are usually 4±1 months on cruise fleets and 6±1 months on cargo fleets.
