  • nitrogen generators;
  • cargo instrumentation and automation systems.

Unlike the Chief Engineer or Second Engineer, who focus on propulsion and auxiliary machinery, the Gas Engineer works specifically with cargo equipment and gas handling systems.Operationally, the Gas Engineer reports to both the Chief Officer for cargo operations and the Chief Engineer for technical maintenance.During sea passage, the Gas Engineer manages:

  • cargo care;
  • tank pressure and temperature;
  • boil-off gas control;
  • cargo monitoring systems.

In port, responsibilities include:

  • loading and discharge support;
  • gas freeing;
  • inerting;
  • cargo changeover operations.

Types of Gas Carriers and Cargo Engineer Operations

LNG Carriers

The LNG fleet is one of the most technologically advanced sectors in global shipping.Gas Engineers maintain:

  • GTT Mark III and NO96 membrane tanks;
  • Moss spherical tanks;
  • Svanehøj cargo pumps;
  • interbarrier monitoring systems;
  • gas handling and reliquefaction systems.

A key responsibility is boil-off gas management and maintaining cargo stability.

LPG and VLGC Vessels

On LPG and VLGC vessels, Gas Engineers work with:

  • screw and reciprocating compressors;
  • fully refrigerated systems;
  • semi-refrigerated cargo systems;
  • propane, butane and ammonia cargo handling;
  • cargo reliquefaction plants.

Ethylene Carriers

Ethylene carriers are among the most technically demanding vessel types in the gas sector.Work includes:

  • cryogenic cargo systems;
  • cascade cooling systems;
  • maintenance at temperatures down to −104 °C.

FSRU

On Floating Storage and Regasification Units, Gas Engineers operate:

  • LNG storage systems;
  • ORV and SCV vaporizers;
  • regasification plants;
