Why Gas Carrier Fleet Offers the Highest Salaries in Shipping
Gas carriers transport liquefied gases under extremely low temperatures and/or high pressure. LNG at −162 °C, LPG at −42 °C, and ethylene at −104 °C require advanced cryogenic systems, complex automation, and highly qualified crews.
Why gas carriers pay more:
- Cryogenic technologies. Cargo is stored at temperatures where ordinary steel becomes brittle.
- Complex equipment. Burckhardt and Atlas Copco cargo compressors, Hamworthy / Wärtsilä Gas Solutions reliquefaction systems, MAN ME-GI and Wärtsilä X-DF engines require advanced technical skills.
- Mandatory Gas Tanker Endorsement. STCW V/1-2 is required for employment.
- Crew shortage. The LNG fleet is growing faster than the market can supply qualified seafarers.
- Vetting and inspections. LNG and LPG vessels undergo strict SIRE 2.0 and SIGTTO inspections.
Types of Gas Carriers
LNG Carriers (Liquefied Natural Gas Carriers)
Large-scale vessels with capacities from 125,000 to 260,000 m³ transporting methane at −162 °C.
Main types:
- Membrane LNG carriers (GTT Mark III, NO96)
- Moss spherical tank LNG carriers
- DFDE
- ME-GI / X-DF
- Steam Turbine LNG vessels
Typical LNG crew size is 25–30 persons. Contracts usually last 4–5 months.
LPG Carriers and VLGC
LPG vessels transport propane, butane, ammonia, and petrochemical gases.
Main types:
- VLGC (Very Large Gas Carrier)
- Fully Refrigerated
- Semi-Pressurized / Semi-Refrigerated
- Fully Pressurized
Ethylene Carriers
Specialized vessels transporting ethylene at −104 °C with advanced cascade refrigeration systems.
FSRU
Floating Storage and Regasification Units used for LNG storage and regasification.
FLNG
Floating LNG production units — one of the most technically advanced vessel types in the world.
